Helping Horses - Equine Rehabilitation

Equine Rehabilitation at Moorcroft

There are many reasons why horses may need some help and rehabilitation during their lifetime.

When horses arrive at Moorcroft, they are settled in well and assessed quietly and professionally, as speedily as possible. Mary has 42 years of real experience riding and training horses with a particular interest and a depth of knowledge on soundness. She is supported by a full-time physiotherapist, who lives and works at the centre, and Lianne Bird BHS ST4 Riding, an experienced and feeling rider with much experience.

Moorcroft also has the benefit of an experienced and a specialist lameness Vet who attends the centre every week. The centre is also lucky enough to have Dr Sue Dyson MA Vet MB PhD DEO Dip ECVSMR, as their specialist orthopaedic lameness expert who visits the centre at least twice per year to provide CPDs for other professionals and to advise at other times when needed.

Box Rest

Box Rest If your horse is lame or has had surgery, often box rest is prescribed for a period of time. This can be a difficult time for the horse and also for the carer/owner/handler. We can help to avoid all the negative issues that this situation can bring as the yard is set up well to ensure that no horse is ever left on their own and that safety is a priority for all. Healing, calmness and a safe environment is provided for all and the indoor school and experienced staff ensure that when walking starts that all is safe and no re-injury can occur. We have much success in this area.

Call Mary on 07929 666408 to discuss your horse's requirements as all horses are individuals and should be treated as such.

Long Reining

Long-reining is a big part of the assessment system and the rehabilitation. It is both diagnostic and therapeutic. It will not break down joints or the anatomy in any way if done correctly but will give the worker of the horse a lot of insight into how the horse is feeling. So, much help and muscle development can occur with this work and measurements are taken and recorded so guesswork is not part of the result – real evidence is available and very valuable to all.

Clients whose horses stay with us are encouraged to learn the important art of good Long-reining so they go away much better skilled to help their horse in the future.

Do you feel your horse is not right?

Many horses are lame, and many riders cannot feel exactly where the problem is, but many know that their horse is not right. We can help. Dealing with the problem early will help to ensure that no further unnecessary breakdown occurs.

If you feel your horse is not performing well and are worrying about this, you need help immediately. Do not be on your own as it is a lonely road to be on and help and support is here and available.

Quiet sympathetic riding goes on and much feedback is given. No horse is pushed out of his or her comfort zone and no gadgets or gimmicks are ever used. Mary’s teaching is always constructive and sympathetic, and all standards are catered for. Everybody’s situation is respected – otherwise real progress cannot occur.

Equine Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is part of the deal here as all horses get checked and treated regularly as good muscle health is vital in a sound comfortable horse. Also, we find that the findings from regular physiotherapy sessions is very useful if a Vet needs to get involved as much can be gained from the history of the muscle tension and pain etc.

Schooling Surfaces

The use of the indoor and outdoor school means that whatever the weather we are able to be consistent with the work here. We believe in SHORT QUALITY sessions for the horse, so submission is not achieved through exhaustion but through understanding , willingness and without breakdown of any parts of the equine anatomy. The school surfaces are very carefully maintained for maximum benefit to the horse
